Week 8 - SO Much Room for Improvement

So, one of the things that I really enjoy about martial arts is how my goal is a moving target. I've always embraced that whether I'm 4 years into my training or 14 years, there will always be room for improvement. 1,000 repetitions of kata, 10,000 repetitions of kata. There will still be room for improvement. What I learned this past week is that there will always…

Week 7 - I Can Train Harder

Another week down. Team Getty ran our first 1/2 marathon of the year this past Saturday. It was the hardest race I've ever done. Ever. It was in Pacifica, a trail run, 3100 feet of climbing... I hurt. I've been consistent with my workouts, like, for years, and especially these last two weeks. So, I shouldn't be sore, right? But I am, I'm that kind off sore where I'm walking…

Week 6 - Back in the Saddle

And by saddle, I mean the one on my bicycle. It's not a comfortable saddle. At all. Nonetheless, I'm glad to be getting my cycling legs back in motion.
This week felt…

Week 5 - Time to Focus on... Focus

So 5 weeks behind me now. And a whole lot more in front of me. My numbers are looking okay. They're not great, but they're not absent, and I'm just going to choose to feel good about that for right now. There has been a lot going on in the last 6 weeks, personally, professionally, and in terms of my test. So I think I need to spend the next couple of weeks focusing on focus.

Week 4 - Another One Down

Spent most of this week in Tucson doing manual labor for my Mum. Wouldn't have it any other way. It might not be runs or weights or kata, but let me tell you , I'm working hard! We built a kitchen island, painted half a house, wired outlets, mounted TVs... Good times. On some days it was way more exhausting than a run and some push-ups. Seriously... …

Week 3 - A Good One

This week was a good one. I got my bike set up for indoor winter trainer rides so that will be really handy for the next couple of months. Although if weather and schedule permit I'd love to go outside. Got a couple walk/hikes in which was nice. Ready to get back into the running this next week. Started the half marathon calendar up for 2014. Already registered for the January run and have March picked out. No half marathon in February but I'll be doing the …

Week 2 - Just Keep Going Anyway

This week... I'm kind of glad it's over. I ran the marathon on Sunday and lived to tell about it. Want to say thanks SO MUCH to those families who came out. And another thanks for the AWESOME signs! (Be sure to zoom in on the picture if you can)

Monday was work and then lots of food and sleep. Them Tuesday I woke up with a pretty gross version of the common…

Week 1 - Unexpected Challenges

So, this week... Well, it was not at all what I expected it to be. There were some unexpected challenges. My mum was admitted to the hospital in Tucson in the afternoon on 11/23. I flew out early on 11/24. She's back home now and doing better, but the whole thing was... Well, unexpected. And I now know how to spell a lot of weird medicine names and can tell you what they do.

Right now I'm on the plane on my way back to Sacramento and thinking this is pretty much my best bet for…

The 100 in Greensboro, AL (Day 2)

This was an awesome day. The people of this community are so thankful. They remember us year after year and come out to watch us work and say hello and thank you to us. The front porches of all the houses around us were well occupied with spectators and cheering folks. Meeting Ms. Georgia was awesome. She is SO excited. She watched every bit of the days work from a neighbor's porch. I love being here!

Go check out the video! I'm going to bed :)…

The 100 in Greensboro, AL (2013 - Day 1)

:)

Made it to Greensboro late tonight but just in time to meet with everyone and get to hear some really great discussions. I just love being here. It's definitely one of my favorite parts of the year.

There was a small group of people today that stood up the first few walls for Ms. Georgia's house. The intention was to go out there tomorrow and get crackin' but there's a big storm rolling in. Big storms in Alabama mean something different that a "big" storm in California.… Continue

Personal Goal - Workouts Update and Lessons So Far

So I've been on my training plan for a good 6 weeks now. And I'm learning A LOT. I've adjusted my workout schedule according to my body's demands.

These are the changes I made:

  • I replaced one sprint workout with a jump-rope workout. I do the same increments with the jump-rope as I did with the sprints except I've cut the rest times in half.
  • I still do three crossfit workouts, but I moved Wednesday's crossfit to Satruday.
  • On Sundays I do a long run/ride…

Call to the Martial Arts History Buffs - Study Help Please

Hi everybody!

I was talking to Mr. Samuel and Ms. Lau yesterday after class about the test next week and it occurred to us that we need to brush up on our martial arts history. So we came up with a master plan:

I am going to start this post with one martial arts history fact. Then, we need everyone to add a fact that isn't already listed.

Sensei, please spot check our posts. And of course, feel free to pitch in.

Okay, so I'll start with a Wansu… Continue

Quinoa Salad Review

Okay, so I made that yummy looking quinoa salad yeaterday and had some for dinner... Here are my thoughts...

I liked it okay. Honesttly, there was some initial disappointment because I felt it was too sweet. That could have something to do with the part of the recipe that said "drizzle." According to my friend who was coaching me (because it's not safe to leave me alone in a kitchen unless I'm only using a rice cooker) said that my version of a "drizzle" is really generous. That… Continue

Fitness Eats - Quinoa Salad

So I went to my favorite recipe website, Two Peas and Their Pod to get the Quinoa chili recipe that I mentioned in an earlier post... but then I realized that it's not really chili weather anymore. So... I found a new recipe to try, for Quinoa Salad. I will be testing this…

My Personal Goal in Writing

Core philosophies... Livin the life...

In reading the post about core philosophies I found myself drawn to this sentence: "often, the best teaching that we do is by simply working on ourselves. As an instructor you are obligated to continue to create a martial arts lifestyle for yourself." And immediately my mind goes to the question Mr. Oliver asked me at my green belt test about what my favorite part of karate is. I answered that kata is my favorite. I wasn't thinking far enough. My favorite part is how little of my karate… Continue
