The theme of the past couple of weeks in UBBT-land has been inspiration and overcoming. I have to say I hit a slump in March and April, despite explicit claims of "coming back". I let discouragement and doubt take center stage in my mind a bit more than I would have liked. Not altogether consciously, I started looking for inspiration (and it looked for me as well). With the spring weather more and more of the seasoned athletes and weekend warriors are visible, and their dedication is inspiring. On campus this past week I saw a lady running pushing two kids in a jogger stroller. She is getting it done. Then I saw a video of Dick and Rick Hoyt--an amazing father/son triathlon team (Rick has cerebral palsy). Their story is completely inspiring, especially seeing Dick pulling Rick in a raft for the swimming component. I also saw an Ironman video that happened to have another friend I know in it--he is legally blind.
What am I overcoming? Right now, seasonal allergies among other things (lungs are important!). Just in the past week I have seen not just my numbers but also my commitment rise again. It's easy to get stuck and get off track, but so valuable knowing how to get back on. I'm not where I want to be, but see how to get there. Often it's being reminded of others' accomplishments that gives one that extra boost.
I'm also inspired and encouraged by my teammates and fellow students. Good wishes to all of the competitors in tomorrow's tournament!
