Weeks 12 & 13 - Side Effects and Plans in the Making

So we are 13 weeks into this thing now. That's 1/4 of a year, 3 months, 92 days. No matter how you count it, there's no denying that there have been a whole lot of pushups. So far so good.

Impressions of "Karate-Do My Way of Life" by Gichin Funakoshi

“Karate-Do My Way of Life” by Gichin Funakoshi presents many informative and thought provoking anecdotes from Master Funakoshi’s life as representations of the true meaning of Karate-Do. This, in essence, is the central theme of the book – the true meaning and application of Karate-Do – beyond its physical manifestations and underlying theory, towards the training of the mind, heart, and character of the individual karateka.

           While I was aware, in…

Karate-Do

I recently read Karate-Do by Gichin Funakoshi.  What I enjoyed most about the book was learning the history of karate.  Karate went from an obscure self-defense form of martial arts, known only in Okinawa, to being world renowned.  Funakoshi, a founder of karate, had a very humble start to teaching karate outside of Okinawa.  While he demonstrated martial arts in Tokyo, he had to work as a groundskeeper for a local school and pawn his personal items to make ends meet.  After World…

Week 10 - Rekindling My Motivation

So, I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about my karate journey. We talked about my test, the criteria, we talked about how I feel I'm doing. And then we talked about why it's important to me. And it made me realize that my journal posts feel... removed. So I'm going to do something different here and see how it…

Week 9 - Hello February

Okay, another week down. It was a good week all around. I'm in a pretty consistent routine when it comes to push-ups sit-ups and kata. I can get it all in on my breaks at work pretty much. Still concerned with my sparring and not getting in the amount of rounds I need per week. Mileage was good. Got closer to the 200 mile mark for the month of January and I've got almost 350 total so far. Steadily logging acts of kindness, too.…

Week 8 - SO Much Room for Improvement

So, one of the things that I really enjoy about martial arts is how my goal is a moving target. I've always embraced that whether I'm 4 years into my training or 14 years, there will always be room for improvement. 1,000 repetitions of kata, 10,000 repetitions of kata. There will still be room for improvement. What I learned this past week is that there will always…

Week 7 - I Can Train Harder

Another week down. Team Getty ran our first 1/2 marathon of the year this past Saturday. It was the hardest race I've ever done. Ever. It was in Pacifica, a trail run, 3100 feet of climbing... I hurt. I've been consistent with my workouts, like, for years, and especially these last two weeks. So, I shouldn't be sore, right? But I am, I'm that kind off sore where I'm walking…

Getty Owl Run/Walk Event

Okay dojo family, here is an opportunity to get out and run for a cause! Are you guys getting familiar with the name "Getty Owl Foundation?" That's kind of what I'm going…

Week 1 through 6 – Time is flying by!

I can't believe that week 6 just ended. It seems like we just started. Looking back, there has been so much happening and that is contributed to my lack of updates.

To recap, I am very pleased with my running numbers. I'm have had to miss some days, but I just obtained a road bike that I will be using to make up the missed miles. On New Years Day I set my personal best times for a 5k, 1k and 1 mile. My times have gotten steady better over this time. Still getting some aches…

Week 6 - Back in the Saddle

And by saddle, I mean the one on my bicycle. It's not a comfortable saddle. At all. Nonetheless, I'm glad to be getting my cycling legs back in motion.
This week felt…

Week 5 - Time to Focus on... Focus

So 5 weeks behind me now. And a whole lot more in front of me. My numbers are looking okay. They're not great, but they're not absent, and I'm just going to choose to feel good about that for right now. There has been a lot going on in the last 6 weeks, personally, professionally, and in terms of my test. So I think I need to spend the next couple of weeks focusing on focus.

A Humble Thank You, A Gift

As we roll in to 2014, I want to thank everyone who is a part of the dojo, and connected to it in some way, for your support during previous year. This was one for the books for my small family, and I think I aged 10 years in 1, but it would have been an even harder ride without your help and support. We were very humbled by your presence and love--from cards and letters to gifts and groceries during our 4 month hospital stay--even to offering up your homes for us to be able to stay close to…

Week 4 - Another One Down

Spent most of this week in Tucson doing manual labor for my Mum. Wouldn't have it any other way. It might not be runs or weights or kata, but let me tell you , I'm working hard! We built a kitchen island, painted half a house, wired outlets, mounted TVs... Good times. On some days it was way more exhausting than a run and some push-ups. Seriously... …

Week 3 - A Good One

This week was a good one. I got my bike set up for indoor winter trainer rides so that will be really handy for the next couple of months. Although if weather and schedule permit I'd love to go outside. Got a couple walk/hikes in which was nice. Ready to get back into the running this next week. Started the half marathon calendar up for 2014. Already registered for the January run and have March picked out. No half marathon in February but I'll be doing the …

Week 2 - Just Keep Going Anyway

This week... I'm kind of glad it's over. I ran the marathon on Sunday and lived to tell about it. Want to say thanks SO MUCH to those families who came out. And another thanks for the AWESOME signs! (Be sure to zoom in on the picture if you can)

Monday was work and then lots of food and sleep. Them Tuesday I woke up with a pretty gross version of the common…

Week 1 - Unexpected Challenges

So, this week... Well, it was not at all what I expected it to be. There were some unexpected challenges. My mum was admitted to the hospital in Tucson in the afternoon on 11/23. I flew out early on 11/24. She's back home now and doing better, but the whole thing was... Well, unexpected. And I now know how to spell a lot of weird medicine names and can tell you what they do.

Right now I'm on the plane on my way back to Sacramento and thinking this is pretty much my best bet for…
