Outside the Dojo

Its been a while since I've been in the dojo for class, but that doesn't mean it's time to stop practicing.

Baby is due May 16. I'd like to say everything has been graceful, sunshine and rainbows, but I have a new respect for the mothers who have come before me. It's been hard in unexpected ways and easier in others. Everything I learned in the dojo has helped. Breathing, how to stay active at your fitness level, mental focus, daily discipline, intentional smiles on grumpy days,… Continue

Reflecting

The beginning of the new year is always a great time for reflection. This last week in particular has been full of meditation.

Looking back on the last year, specifically the UBBT, I took on too much and too little at the same time. What I mean is I was capable of everything I committed to, but I was overconfident in my response to the unexpected life challenges. It was a big year last year. Just a few of the life changes: committed to UBBT Team 7, scheduled my life around the…

Dojo Visit

For the last two weeks, dad and I were in Florida helping my brother move in to his new home. There was lots to do! Three of the four major projects were finished with headway on the fourth. It was also a great vacation. The highlight was visiting a local Shorin-Ryu dojo. Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do was the name. Renshi Geoffrey Gaudoin was kind enough to allow me to attend adult class.

The night arrives. Always show up early. Why? Stretching is good but watching the kids class was… Continue

UBBT Update

Journal entries have slowed down because there hasn't been much to update. Numbers are pitifully behind. Life is tipsy turvy. And everything is just as it should be.

Character building has been the focus of June and July. The first two codes of bushido are on my mind of late. #1: Rectitude: To do the right thing. #2: Bravery: To have courage when faced with a challenge. These two principles have served as guides when mediating in the recent weeks. It was less about who was right and… Continue

The Most Important Goal

Lately, I have felt silent. There have been lots of ideas for a journal, but when the time comes to write it out? The ideas fall flat. Last night is worth writing about.

For 5 years I have had the same fitness goal: to keep up with my nephew Luke. All the push ups, crunches, miles, kata, all of it, is to be fit enough to play with my now 5 year old nephew at his level. Yesterday, that goal was accomplished!

Luke was in town visiting grandma. She needed a…

Week 23 - Proverbs

Proverbs is known as a book of wisdom. I like to think of it as a book of perspective. Sure its the same thing in a way, but reading a book of wisdom is daunting. A book on perspective sounds more digestible.

There were a few passages that gave more perspective than most.

Proverbs 4:23-27 “Above all else, guard your heart for it is the wellspring of life. Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix…

UBBT Week 22 - Thoughts on Gi

Gi. The uniform worn in martial arts.

Gi. The first code of Bushido.

Gi. The right way.

2011 has been tumultuous with the UBBT commitment, a few bouts with the flu, a new job, conscientious diet changes, deaths in the extended family, a best friend leaving for officer training, stepping in when Mr. Oliver was on the Alabama Project, and more…

Most importantly, the new job. All the other aspects of life were at least balanced before the new work schedule robbed me…

Week 19 - Spirit

My last journal concentrated on numbers, meeting goals, and motivation. Today is a report on spirit.

Today was the 6th Annual Niello VW Ranch Run.  There were some VWs I hadn't seen before and some old favorites. Tin cans, pimped out racers, campers and off roaders. Valve cover races down a killer ramp were even more popular this year than last. The Blackboard Bug was out again, decorated by children of all ages in imaginative chalk art. The bake sale was overflowing with…

Week # Something

April is a new start. First step is to take stock. I have been avoiding entering the numbers into my spreadsheet. I knew the sprained thumb, stomach flu, and hip injury took a lot out of me last month. The numbers were sure to reflect it. Tonight I faced my the spreadsheet and was surprised to find encouragement.

I was encouraged because as I entered the numbers they were more motivating than deflating. I did how much despite the challenges? I am awesome! I have lost 15 pounds since…

UBBT Week 14 - Book List

A few people have asked me what books I'm reading, or planning to read. Here is my list in the random order they happen to be stacked in...

Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse

High Maintenance Relationships: How to Handle Impossible People by Les Parrott III, Ph.D.

The Peacemaker: A Biblical Guide to Resolving Personal…

Week 13 - New News

Many new things have happened lately...

A new job with lots of new responsibility, opportunity and lingo. The first time competiting in a any competition. A new season of allergies. New motivations for UBBT. New, better smelling laundry soap. A new layout for my eliving space. A new purse inspiring organization. Some new clothes that fit a new weight and size. A new gi soon.

Why does any of this warrant a journal? In the UBBT spirit, I wanted this journal to celebrate the… Continue

UBBT Week 12- Truckin' Along

Usually, something inspires me during the week. This week there is no story of inspiration. Only a confirmation of my UBBT commitments. After being sick for far too long, I'm finally feeling myself again. Time to build up those UBBT muscles I lost to the flu!

Today started with a solid workout. My second book is coming along. Kiai is feeling as strong as ky determination. Class was spent breaking in the horse stance again.

Tomorrow is back to the usual routine. Looking… Continue

UBBT Week 11

The last week was the hardest yet. Sick in bed makes it hard to do any of the UBBT exercises, acts of kindness, or other requirements. Fever made reading impossible so I didn't even start my next book as planned. Arg.

Lisa Spangolo's post about not giving up was very inspiring. I reread it a couple times to remind myself of the primary UBBT requirement: don't give up. The long term view helps me stay focused in times like these. It doesn't make it easy though. Tonight's class for… Continue

UBBT Week 10

The focus this week was on a book I recently finished. Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. It described Siddhartha's life and the many paths he took. At one time a holy man, then a wandering nomad, next a business man, and finally a lowly oarsman. Each path revealed a different aspect of himself. Each was a different but equally true self. That's what impressed me most.

2010 was a topsy turvy kind of year for me. I rushed into an opportunity to move to Sacramento last April. College ended… Continue

Karate Praise Report

In our classes, Mr. Oliver has occasionally mentioned foot awareness. We humans naturally protect our face when bugs, fists, or annoying siblings get too close. We don't naturally have the same awareness in our legs. That's where martial arts training comes in handy.

Today karate overcome nature.

A friend and I went shopping for Asian inspired fabrics for Ms. Bitar's green belt project. As we entered the store, Charlotte took her sun glasses off, started to fold them,… Continue

UBBT- Week 9 Perspective

As usual, I got stuck in my own rut. All it took was a friend's casual comment to snap me out of it.

Last Friday was a superproductive day in regards to my declutterization goals. Living room furniture was rearranged. More useful items found their way to the thrift store for a new home. Some went to the antique store this time. Laundry was completed. Storage is clean- organized even! A few more paper based projects are left, but the new furniture arrangement is already motivating me.… Continue

Awareness Observations

At the self defense class last Saturday, Mr. Oliver described the states of awareness. He also challenged us to play a game. When you are in public, look at the people are you. Are there any oblivious white? Any cause for an orange alert? Hopefully no red!

This morning I played the observation game at McKinley Park. Here are several observations...

An older lady was walking her older dog. She was steady in pace, alert with eyes up and a grouchy suspicious face. It was as… Continue

UBBT Week 7 & 8

There is so much to reflect on in the last two weeks. The tournament was quite an experience. So was the class at the Joslin dojo. There was also my green belt project at Ride To Walk. All this seems hazy though. In the UBBT spirit is perseverance, here is the last two weeks assembled from loosely written reflections after the events and foggy memory.

The tournament was my second ever attended. The first was seven years ago in the bay area. Both felt overwhelming. Where do I…

UBBT First Group Class

Our first class together as UBBT Team 8 was something unique. It's satisfying to know I personally could complete the class... the sheer numbers! In the first half: 240 pushups, 240 situps, 480 wall kicks. The second half felt more like playtime: bear crawl, lunge kicks, flutter kicks, and more. I wondered at points if the exercise was beyond my hard limits, and pushed on to find myself at the very brink. We all survived the intensive workout in good health.

The intensity was a large… Continue

Week 5- Evidence of Change

Life has blessed me with the same doctor most of life. She knows me from when my four front teeth fell out in two days, when I played sports year round, when growth spurts started, and ended, when I entered high school, when I graduated high school and went to college. So the first visit back after the college hiatus was more like a chat with an old friend.

It was still a check up though. Blood pressure. Good.Pulse. Normal. Allergies? Same. Then the moment came when she stuck the… Continue
