Zen Martial Arts Center

Sacramento Martial Arts and Karate

Hello all. My name is Chrissy. I've been in classes for about three weeks now. And I LOVE it. I started looking for the right dojo about two months ago and I've found myself a little gem. My interest in martial arts goes "way" back. I was active in karate when I was young but when we moved overseas (Egypt) we couldn't find anywhere for me to continue. Now, I've found the right place and I'm ready to move forward.

Karate is a lot of things for me: I like the discipline it encourages, I like the integrity it encourages, I like the confidence that comes with it. It's a lifestyle choice; like being a vegetarian, except way more exciting, far  more challenging. I'm really looking forward to learning the art, and to being challenged. It's nice, too, to be making friends along the way.

Welcome to the dojo family Chrissy. I'm glad that you shopped around at a few schools before deciding on ours. I always recommend to prospective students that they do just that. This way we really know its the best fit for you.

Side note: Yesterday in class you mentioned that you can whip up some good soy recipes. Are you a vegetarian? Maybe you can share some good dishes with those of us that are improving our diet over the next year?
Afternoon Sensai. I am a born and raised vegetarian. That's only mostly true. We ate some seafood when I was really young, but since I was maybe 8 or so I was raised vegetarian. I've had chicken and turkey but have never eaten red meat, or any other. I eat tuna every now and then, tried salmon once and tilapia a few itmes. I've been questioned a lot (sometimes even criticized) for a being a vegetarian and an athlete. But I am firm in my belief that it's a healthy and whiole life style. I'd be more than happy to share some soy recipies!

Also, in your effort to adopt the okinawan diet, you might consider looking into Farm Fresh to You (www.farmfreshtoyou.com). It's a service that delivers organic fruits and vegetables, all grown locally (within 75 miles I think), to your door twice a week. We've been doing it for about 2 months and LOVE it. You get a little something different every time. There are a few different options, but you can do a bit of customizing within each of those choices. It's all yummy, very reasonably priced and supports local farms.
Thanks for the tip on farmfreshtoyou.com . I will definitely check it out! I've never been a big fan of red meats. In particular I don't like how I feel after I eat a meat-heavy meal.

Fish is my weakness. I love salmon.
Hey Chrissy,
Thanks for sharing a bit about yourself. I'm not in your class, but my kids, Jack and Ella study with Mr. Oliver and I too, think this karate community is quite a gem. I've enjoyed getting to know the different families and I hope you'll share some of your recipes on line so I can get 'em too! Mr. Oliver is working on his UBBT and I sometimes feel like my life as a mom is the UDFNMT (ultimate daily family nutritious meals test)! Vegetarian recipes would be a great addition to my usual routine! Take Care, Shirley
Shirley, I'll have you know that Jack told me about his snack that he had yesterday (celery and peanut butter). I ended up craving it all through the rest of classes so guess what I had as soon as I got home? :)
cool. Hope you had the raisins for the entire "ants on a log" effect.... :)
Now there's an idea I didnt think of...but having children aids the creativity aspect. I know what I will be getting soon, celery and raisins!
