Sacramento Martial Arts and Karate

Our son Kristoffer has taken on a "100+ Acts of Kindness" community service project in preparation for his green belt test in Sensei Oliver's Junior Karate Class. With each person committing to 10 acts each, he hopes to achieve "way more" than 100 acts of kindness and make a global impact with our extended family and friends here in the U.S. and in other countries. If you can help out, that would be great! Attached is his letter and a form you can use to log your acts of kindness. Thanks for helping make our community a kinder place!! Roberta Saum: I was at the gas station the other night and a guy in a motorcycle realized he didn't have money for gas. I helped him out.

Roberta Saum: Taking a burden off my husbands hands today since he's got a lot on his plate. I'm driving down to Woodland to take his dad from his Alzheimer home to an emergency dentist visit in Davis. It will take up most of my day.

1. Helped a friend paint the outside of his house, my hands, and my clothes.
2. When I was getting gas I noticed that the elderly lady in front of me forgot to put her gas cap back on. It fell off as she drove away. I snagged it real quick and was able to flag her down and get it to her.
3. I found a laptop in the bathroom at Borders--left it with the lost and found folks there--someone is going to be happy.
4. Went to my parents house to borrow one of my dad's tools and noticed their trash can was out. I put the can away and took their dogs out. How come I never did that stuff as a kid?
5. Worked on a friends computer and removed the failed memory stick that was causing problems. Yup, I'm the computer guy.
6. Young man in front of me in line was a little short on paying for his groceries. Instead of him having to put things back, I payed the excess for him. We've all been there and it really stinks.
7. Saw a mom struggling while dealing with her kid, groceries, and shopping cart. Gave her an extra set of hands to use. Thankfully, she gave them back afterward.
8. Turned off my neighbor's sprinkler system. They are on vacation and it was running for five hours straight. Their lawn was a bayou.
9. A woman found me on Facebook and said she found my book bag downtown. It must have belonged to another Mike Oliver. But I thanked her for her kindness and offered a month of free karate classes to her as a thanks for her kindness. What goes around comes around right?
10. Offered to donate my time to Master Joslin's Karate booth and events at the Gold County Fair. He might use me in a demo. Ouch.

Acts of Kindness
1. I spend atleast 1 day every weekend at a friends house. This friend has recently had a child, and is dealing with the everyday challenges that come with a new child. So for the past month or so, every time I go over to his house I end up cleaning up the common rooms for him while we are talking or he is dealing with his new son.
2. My mother has trouble getting around, she has always had medical problems and has ailing joints and legs. So when I went over to visit her and noticed that her appartment could use some work I cleaned up the place and did the dishes and took out her garbage.
3. When a friend of mine went out of the country for 2 weeks she of necessity left her car behind. Where she lives there are several stray cats that enjoy using cars as sunning platforms. So after 12 days or so the car had accumulated an unsightly layer of dust and cat hair. So before she returned I washed her car.
4. While exiting a restraunt I noticed an elderly couple coming towards the door, so I held the door for them.
5. My grandmother lives with me and my dad. She has some serious medical problems and needs near constant attention. My dad is also disabled and it is hard for him to get around. Although I cant do it all of the time, I try to take care of my grandmother's more menial needs so that my dad can rest.
6. One day recently when leaving a grocery store parking lot I came across a homeless man who was holding a sign that said "homless Marine, please help, God bless." I have 2 friends in the Marines, so I have a soft spot for them. I had no cash on me, but i did have a large accumulation of change that I had been saving, so I gave that to him.
7. My mother as I said before has trouble getting around. This includes to her many doctor appointments, as she has no car. So I make myself available to drive her to her appointments and errands.
8. In my house we rotate through chore assignments such as dishes, garbage and general cleaning. One night my disabled father was having a particularly painful night, so I took on his chores for the day.
9. My mother has been having a hard time because of her ailing mother, so to help brighten her day I took her to lunch with my brother.

I helped a friend to get a bracket ready to fit on the outside of his house to support his chimney.

Mike Dilkey: I was in Reibes and witnessed a car accident. I then noticed a mother a small child who appeared to be injured. I drove them to the hospital, helped them register and waited for them to be admitted. Not sure why the paramedics were not there, but I stepped in and helped.

Nancy Dilkey: Spent some time helping a parent deal with their child's special needs. Haven't done child/parent advocating for a while; the rewards were great.

Roberta Saum: I've been offering to help my neighbor who is going through radiation for cancer, but they never have anything for me to do for them so I just gave my rewards points (a generous amount of cash) to her in a gift card. More than anything it seemed to boost her spirit that we did that.
