Is it better to adopt a dog from a shelter or purchase from a pet store?

My name is PJ and I am doing my Little Dragon's Black belt project.

I am raising money for the Central California Labrador Rescue by doing Lemonade Stands.

For one of my stars I wanted to raise the discussion: "Is it better to adopt a dog from a shelter/rescue or purchase from a pet store?"

My Answer:

  "I think it's better to adopt a dog from a rescue or shelter because you are doing a good deed.
They [the rescue] are able to observe the dog and they can tell you I what kind of dog your getting."
